How have your opinions about remixing and appropriating original works changed from the beginning of the semester to now?
As an artist, I have been trained to think that using the work of others is totally off limits. My high school
art teacher hated when we would draw pictures found on Google photos. However, remixes have various benefits that
both utilize and challenge the work of others. I now am open to the idea of using work off the internet in a project,
if the project involves remixing. Here, students are using various techniques to reimagine these work. If touching on
social issues, it is beneficial to use work that already exists because it should be part of the conversation.
What web literacy & 21st Century skills, as outlined by Mozilla, do you think are most important and why?
The most important web literacy & 21st Century skill is CONNECT. To connect is to extend thinking beyond the
individual learner to integrate social networks and tools in problem solving. I also believe that to 'connect'
is to make connections. Students who make connections between internal experiences and thoughts, with current
issues and conversations, are able to use perspective, which promotes knowledge construction in a collaborative
environment. Community is SO important, and is always prevelent online, especially within social networks. Connection
encourages participation of not just one student, but of many individuals.
